MY TWO DADS | Naomi Wallwork
Currently in production
Feature documentary

Synopsis
My Two Dads compares and contrasts the lives of two very different men who both happen to be my dad. My father Rudy is an aspiring property magnate who loves betting, BBQs and beer. My stepfather Phil is the East & Bays Courier longest serving paper boy and a sometime film extra and reality TV star. He loves Morris Minors, the Boy’s Brigade and hates to throw anything away. The embarrassment that their activities caused me while growing up is now replaced by appreciation and admiration. But is this only because I’m turning into them?

Bio
Naomi has worked as a lawyer in Wellington and a contracts manager for the BBC World Service in London. In 2005 she decided to follow her film-making dreams and returned to New Zealand to attend The Film School. Following graduation from The Film School Naomi freelanced in production while trying to get funding for various film and theatre projects, including this documentary. She has made short films and documentaries that have screened at OutTakes, the Wellington Fringe Film Festival and the Belladonna Film Festival as well as on the gay magazine programme The Outlook. Naomi currently works at NZ On Air in the Television Team.

STRAWBERRIES WITH THE FUHRER | Amy O’Connor
Currently in production
Feature documentary

Synopsis
How many people can say that they had strawberries and ice cream with Adolf Hitler? How many people are retelling that experience 70 years later and on the other side of the world from where it all happened? Helga Tiscenko, 79 years old, retired school teacher living in Timaru, New Zealand. A wife of 60 years, mother ofthree, and grandmother of four.Helga is the daughter of Hermann Höfle, a high ranking Nazi Officer, acquitted at the Nuremberg trials, but then tried and executed in Slovakia in 1947. The family know very little why. Helga emigrated from Germany, leaving her mother and sister, and has spent her life after the collapse of the Nazi regime knuckling down to create a life for her family in New Zealand – to be free of the burdens of the memories from her past. This documentary story invites the audience to experience a moment in Helga’s shoes; to explore her battle of living two separate lives and at the same time take a journey to search for viable information about her family’s tie to the Third Reich.

Bio
Amy O’Connor has been involved with filmmaking for six years and in that time has developed from a film student at the School of Fine Arts Canterbury University to a hard working member of the film and television industry in Wellington. Amy has taken on roles that have exposed her to both pre-production and post-production. These experiences have heightened her awareness of the potency of documentary as a visual form; both on an emotional and intellectual level. Amy’s desire to work in the documentary field has led her to follow her instincts. She has made documentaries on women in the work place; Victorian prostitutes in 19th century Christchurch; and has now uncovered the story of a South Cantabrian family and their relationship with Hitler. Amy has an instinct for a catchy story and the ability to attach a challenging treatment to it.

FINDING MERCY
Currently in early production
Feature documentary

Synopsis
At the age of nine, I stood on the runway of a Zimbabwean airforce base with my best friend, Mercy Shumba. Our excitement was palpable. Today, we were to meet our hero – Comrade Robert Mugabe – in person. Me as pale skinned as Mercy was dark, we were poster children for the new Zimbabwe. We had been chosen to greet Mugabe. Nervously we curtsied, smiled for the news cameras, and placed garlands of flowers around his neck. We were a symbol that all was well in post-independence Zimbabwe. But it was not. In this documentary I will search for Mercy, tracking back through our lives which year for year span Mugabe’s reign. Along the way I will face the stark differences we have come to represent – my comfortable life in New Zealand a far cry from her tenuous existence in Zimbabwe.

PICTURES OF SUSAN | Dan Salmon

ROOTS ON THE MOVE | Serena Stevenson
Documentary Art Video
Currently in post production

Synopsis
It took two weeks of fast thinking, a fake engagement and a belief that there must be more to this place than armed borders, militancy and bad news for Serena Stevenson to become the first New Zealander to film in the highly restricted North East of India. The area, unknown to most, is fraught with militancy, corruption, violent protests and loss of identity amongst its colonised tribes. Two risky visits and 18 months of dedication to the project has resulted in 2000 powerful stills photographs, 100 hours of stunning raw footage, originally recorded eclectic fusion music all used to create an innovative experiential art video which is ready for post production.

Bio
Serena Stevenson is one of New Zealand’s most distinguished documentary photographers. Her work on Maori tattooing, Marginalized youth, and Family intimacy, is currently being exhibited and published throughout New Zealand. In 2004 Serena embarked on new terrain, multimedia, using moving film, graphics, music and stills photography. Serena has produced music videos, short, medium length film, one of which a feature length film is near competition. Her work has been screened and exhibited in New Zealand, America, Europe, and Tahiti. Her publications include M.I.L.K, Friendship, (2000), Maori World, (2003) and A Peoples Capital, (The City Mission, 2008). Stevenson is a full time practicing multimedia artist based Auckland, New Zealand.

FUNNY BONES | Luke Wheeler & Peter Simpson
Feature documentary
Currently in production

Synopsis
Rhys Darby, Flight of the Concords, Brendhan Lovegrove, Te Radar, Mike King, Di Henwood. From a bunch of guys telling jokes in a pub fifteen years ago to international celebrity, New Zealand comedy has come of age. This is a film that investigates New Zealand stand up, the places, the celebrities and the wannabes. Comedians are sharp observers; their humour satirises and reflects popular New Zealand culture. We will highlight what it is to be a stand up comedian and produce a document that encapsulates elements of New Zealand culture in the here and now.

Bio
Luke Wheeler is an independent filmmaker who is working closely on this documentary with Peter Simpson, the editor on the work. In 2007 Luke was a finalist for the Emerging Filmmaker of the Year at the SPADA Conference and had a residency in Delhi, India. He has made three short films and a number of 48 Hour films – the last of which won in Auckland this year.

KING OF CARAVANS | Zoe McIntosh
Currently in production
Feature documentary

Synopsis
A humorous and insightful documentary about Peter one – the charismatic owner of a trailer park, who provides a unique sense of community to a group of individuals who would otherwise be struggling economically and socially in New Zealand society. Along the way we’ll meet the people he helps, and the people who hate him, shedding light on a truly unique character.

Bio
Zoe is a graduate of Canterbury University School of Fine Arts, where she majored in film theory and practical film (BFA). While studying she made two short documentaries – Night Vision, exploring the extraordinary relationship between a pimp and a prostitute and Mail Order – about men who purchase mail order brides in New Zealand. Mail Order was selected for the Chicago International Film Festival, NZ Media Peace Awards and DOCNZ 06, where she was awarded special mention for Best Emerging Filmmaker. She interned with Gibson Group and Red Sky Productions before deciding to pursue her own independent ideas. Lost In Wonderland is her first major film. She has since directed several segments for the award winning TV arts show, The Gravy, and has just wrapped shooting on a 35mm short film called Day Trip. In 2008 she won the SPADA pitching award with a feature film idea, inspired by a peculiar hitch hiking adventure she had. Zoe is currently developing another documentary called King of Caravans that she hopes to start shooting in October.

PICTURES OF SUSAN | Dan Salmon
Currently in production
Feature documentary

Synopsis
Pictures of Susan is the story of an extraordinary New Zealand artist, a story of irrepressible creative force. Autistic before autism was recognised, Susan stopped talking at the age of four. With no other options than a school for the intellectually handicapped, Susan was sidelined from the normal progress of other children. At least she had 11 brothers and sisters at home and lots and lots of coloured pencils.

Bio
Dan Salmon is a versatile and energetic storyteller for the screen. He is an award-winning director and producer and has won the Grand Prix du Jury and Prix du Public at the 2007 FIFO Festival International du Film Documentaire Oceanien. His credits include high-end television programmes such as the 2050-What If? docu-drama series for TV3 which he wrote, produced and directed, the authorial documentary Children of 1984, Artsville’s TOKI Does New York and the acclaimed popular documentaries A Good Way to Die? and Made in Taiwan.

We are excited to announce the line up for the inaugural DOC2DOC in Wellington. Our chairperson for the evening will be accomplished filmmaker Gaylene Preston.

Date: Wednesday 19 August 2009
Time: 7.30pm
Venue: The Lodge at Southern Cross (39 Abel Smith St)

Entry by koha. Everyone welcome.

Overview of the line up below.

THE NZ NATIONAL FILM UNIT: HERO OR ICON FOR SOME, EMBARRASSMENT TO OTHERS
Director Barry Carter
Documentary | Currently in pre-production

It started off as the Motion Picture Studios of the Department of Industries, Commerce, Tourism, and Publicity in 1936 (when they acquired the film studios of the Miramar based company Filmcraft); renamed the NZ National Film Unit in 1941; sold to TVNZ in 1990 and incorporated into The Film Unit Ltd; sold to WingNut Films in 1999 where in 2005 it was renamed, Park Road Post. We know that the NZ NFU is an important and integral part in the history of the New Zealand film industry and is a story that should be told. The films that the NFU produced provided an insight into the changing social and political landscape of the country.

Biography
Barry formed FootPath Films in December 2006 and graduated from The Film School in 2007. Since then he has shot and edited several corporate videos and an original short film. His clients have included Massey University’s Department of Sleep/Wake Research in Wellington, the Guo Musical Instrument Company of Taiwan and he recently shot, edited and authored a double DVD of a Guitar Workshop by American guitarist Carl Tosten. Barry has also worked as a camera operator on several projects including the documentary Yes That’s Me: Dave Murphy Plays the Blues directed by Costa Botes, the Tommy Love Valentine Spectacular Live 2009 and a series of dance videos for DANZ, which were directed and produced by Julian Ward.

CROWS’ FALL
Director Raechel Rees
Documentary Short | Currently in post-production

Crow’s Fall is a reflexive essay film about being thrown into an issue, a country and a style of activism that changed my worldview about the power of civil society to make a difference at the political level.

In May 2008, I flew to Ireland to assist John Rodsted and Mette Eliseussen on the Handicap International sponsored Ban Bus. The main goal of the Ban Bus trip was to raise public awareness of cluster bombs in the lead up to the main negotiations and conference in Dublin and present a sobering case for why cluster bombs should be struck off the list of weapons in use today. After a few failed attempts holding my weight in discussions of weapons use in places such as Ethiopia, I retreated into the eye piece of the camera for the trip documenting the many voices of experience telling it like it is.

Biography
Raechel Rees was born in Nelson in 1978 and currently lives in Wellington, New Zealand. She is one trimester away from completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology and Film at Victoria University of Wellington and one step closer to her goal of producing and directing films that integrate the principles of ethnography and cinema verite filmmaking. In 2010, Rees will utilise her honours year to develop her first independent ethnographic film – a cross-cultural investigation into standards in education in America and New Zealand.

A PLACE TO STAY
Producer and Director Marie Russell
36 minute documentary | Completed

This is a documentary about the unique design and unusual social history of Salisbury Garden Court, a group of 16 houses clustered in matching pairs around a tennis court near the top of Tinakori Hill in Wadestown, Wellington. Through the story of this particular place the film explores the interaction of urban design and community.

Biography
A place to stay is Marie’s first documentary film. Marie works as a university researcher (currently half time PhD student and half-time Research Fellow in the Department of Public Health at the University of Otago, Wellington). In the past she has worked as a librarian, a mother at home, and an independent radio documentary producer — making about 20 documentaries for Radio New Zealand from 1998 to about 2004.

TALES OF MYSTERY & IMAGINATION
Director Geoff Murphy
Documentary Feature | Completed

Tales of Mystery & Imagination is a film-and-music interpretation of the poetry and short stories of Edgar Allan Poe. New Zealand’s most successful film director, Geoff Murphy, has teamed up with talented young saxophonist and composer Lucien Johnson to turn a unique musical suite into an accessible documentary/art film.

Biography
After years of battling studio executives in Hollywood in defense of his artistic vision, Geoff has chosen to recharge his batteries on a project that is not ruled by the dollar or the dictates of (insert your own stereotype of a Hollywood studio flunkey). He has found it a wonderful experience, reminiscent of his early days as a traveling musician and film-maker with Bruno Lawrence and Blerta.
